The multi-barrier approach includes selecting the best possible source for water, using a mechanical filtration system,
residual chlorination (at 5% to 10% of current levels), and a non-chemical biological disinfection method.
"The approach recognizes that while individual barriers may be inadequate in effectively removing or preventing contamination,
and therefore in protecting public health, together they provide greater assurance that
the water will be safe to drink over the long term." — Health Canada 2005
Since 1999, the EPA and Health Canada have considered UV radiation the best available technology to non-chemically disinfect drinking water.
Why UV?
- UV disinfection is the most effective, least complicated and least expensive technology to disinfect water.
- UV disinfection does not add chemicals to the environment, require chemical cleaning of a filtration medium, nor require backwash of infectious water into the environment.
- It is the only NSF certifiable microbiological water purification system.
The Truth About NSF Certified Systems
The only global gold standard accepted by environmental regulatory agents worldwide,
the NSF/ANSI 55 Class A Certified system, ensures that there will be a minimum UV dose of 40mJ/cm2
at the end of lamp life. And if the transmittance of the water drops below 75%,
the UV system will detect it.
