“No Bottled Water Required!”
Camp Manitou Ensures Pure, Safe water for Campers. Always.
Summer
camp. Just thinking about it conjures up nostalgic memories of warm
days spent swimming in the lake, cool nights enjoyed by
the light of a campfire and the creation of friendships that last
forever. Pretty idyllic picture when viewed through the eyes of
a child but what about as a parent? What do we think about when
sending our kids to camp?
Top of mind concerns for campers’ parents usually range
from homesickness to insect bites to sunburn. Very rarely
do we ask if the water at the camp is safe for drinking. In fact according
to Mark Diamond, Director of Camp Manitou, “we’re not
asked as often as we should be!”
Camp Manitou, situated in the beautiful Muskoka region of Ontario,
stands today much as it has stood for over forty years, as a unique
summer home where children from around the world come together
to unlock and enrich their passion for group living as they participate
in sports, arts, and outdoor adventure. Founded in 1959, the camp
is renowned for its ability to nurture and develop children’s
social and emotional growth. But it also has another – rather
important – distinction from other camps: Camp Manitou has
implemented a state-of-the-art, multi-barrier water purification
solution that exceeds government standards for safe drinking water.
How did they do it? With the addition of a Hallett™ System from
UV Pure Technologies.
“I’ve always been concerned about water quality and
the safety of our drinking water,” explains Mark. “Even
before the Walkerton tragedy I was researching purification systems
to ensure the safety of our campers.”
Camp Manitou, long before water quality issues came to the forefront,
installed a two-step purification system incorporating both filtration
and chlorination. This lead to the camp receiving Level 1 Treatment
certification – before it was required by government legislation.
But Mark didn’t stop there. He wanted to be 100% sure the
water at his camp was safe so he began investigating the use of
ultra violet water purification systems as the ultimate fail safe
system to his multi-barrier solution.
After speaking with officials
at the Ministry of Environment who confirmed that the implementation
of a UV system would be an inexpensive
way to ensure – absolutely – the safety of the camp’s
water, Mark then asked his team, including consultants, contractors
and the camp’s on-site plumber which system they would recommend.
The recommendation was unanimous: a Hallett™ System with Crossfire
Technology™ from UV Pure Technologies.
“I looked at conventional systems as well but found that
the Hallett™ UV purification
system was technologically superior,” Mark
states. “With two UV lamps, elliptical reflectors and 360° radiation
the result is the highest UV dose possible to deactivate pathogens.
And, after meeting with the UV Pure team, I trusted them implicitly.”
