Minac Holiday Village Values The Hallett's Fool Proof Technology
Hallett technology keeps their guests safe; UV Pure's Customer Service team gets to the bottom of the resort's water source problem
Minac Holiday Village is a remote wilderness resort in the interior British Columbia. Last year they learned that they had coliform in the water, so the resort decided to upgrade from an old-style UV unit to a Hallett UV system in October 2005. In August, 2006, the Hallett system went into alarm and shut off the water distribution in the resort. So the resort operators called on UV Pure to help identify the problem that caused the alarm and shutdown.
UV Pure's customer service team did UV transmittance tests on two water samples from the resort - one prior to any treatment and one after filtration, but before entering the Hallett system. UV Pure advised the operators that the tests showed a 64% transmittance on the untreated sample and 75.6% on the filtered sample. The raw, untreated water sample, with a UVT of 64%, was very low and indicated that the lake water definitely needed pre-treatment with the carbon filter before UV sterilization could be effective. The second sample, at 75.6% UVT, confirmed that their primary, carbon filtration system was working, since the water moved from 64% to 75.6% after filtration. However, 75.6% UVT for filtered water is still considered "borderline" UV transmittance for UV sterilization systems.

These UVT tests revealed that the alarm was caused by a temporary change in the condition of the pre-treated, at-source water. This change was possibly caused by water borne vegetation finding its way into the water intake at the lake, and then breaking down in the pre-filter, resulting in a temporary cloudiness in the water. This would trigger an alarm once the UVT decreased to a level where the UV light could not effectively sterilize the water.
The operators disinfected and flushed the system and since then there have been no further alarms. They submitted 3 consecutive samples to the Public Health lab, and verified that the water system was good to go again, so they could lift the boil water order at the resort.
"I've recommended these units to many, many resorts. I tell other resort operators that if they are looking at upgrading their UV systems, there's no other choice but the UV Pure system. It's pretty obvious that the Hallett unit did the job by letting us know that something was wrong with the water. Since we have a moving target with possible vegetation entering the water system, we feel secure because the Hallett system will let us know if this happens again! In addition, the Hallett Diagnostic Tool
allows us to 'see' exactly what is happening with our water at all times. This system is magic - it allows us to sleep at night without worrying about what might be flowing out of cabin faucets!" — Lloyd McTaggart, Minac Holiday Village, Canim Lake, B.C.
