Upstream's On-Board Diagnostics Impresses Dealer and Customer

An Easy Service Call

Peter Hercus of Purtek Environmental, Ontario is 100% impressed with the Upstream he installed in an elderly couple's rural farm property in Eastern Ontario. He installed an Upstream 10-75 with 5 micron pre-filtration to handle the customer's dug well water which was high in iron and hardness.

"We installed the system in July, 2006 and the system has been working perfectly since then. In early September we did make a service call when the Upstream went into a water alarm mode. When I arrived at the site, the ease of service and diagnosing the problem was fantastic.

The quartz sleeve was crystal clear because of the self-cleaning wiper and purge valve. Everything on the Upstream was operating perfectly. In particular I found that the built-in UVT/UVI reader was instrumental in helping me diagnose the water condition that triggered the water alarm in the first place," said Peter Hercus.

Fluctuating UVT Levels Caused By Heavy Rains

When Purtek originally installed the Upstream, the UVT was close to 96%. In September when the water quality alarm went off because the UVT readings had changed. When Peter arrived at the site, he noted that while running the water, the UVT reading ranged from 70-85%. The customer also explained the water was a little swampy smelling over the previous few days, coinciding with significant rainfall. With the UVT data, and the information about the rain, Peter was able to correctly diagnosis the reason for the water quality alarm. It turned out that surface water contained organics (and no doubt bacteria) which infiltrated the well and temporarily altered the UVT.

Upstreams Handle UVT levels As Low As 50%

There are six models of the Upstream series. Two of these models, the 10-50 (10 gpm, 50% UVT) and the 15-50 (15 gpm, 50% UVT) handle waters sources with UVTs as low as 50%. These days, many Upstream dealers and installers are opting to use the 50% UVT models, to reduce the likeliness of water quality alarms due to fluctuating UVT levels when heavy rain or other water quality issues arise.

Peace of Mind For the Dealer and Customer

"When we followed up a few days, after no further rainfall, the UVT was back to 94%, and there was no more odor. This proved to the customer exactly what was happening with the water - that the rain caused the UVT levels to change, which set off the water alarm. He learned first-hand that his Upstream system is working as it should and that it protects him from potentially dangerous water when weather events impact his well water..

With any of the "traditional" old-style UV systems, I would never even have known there was a problem at this location in the first place. The quartz sleeve would have been coated with iron and organic content, causing the actual UV dose to be questionable. And with no warning alarm there would be no reason to know that the water was potentially unsafe," said Peter Hercus, Purtek Environmental Inc.
